Funeral / Salat al-Janazah

Funeral prayer is very important and sacred part of Islamic society because if a person is buried without it, the entire Muslim community will incur a sin for having neglected this very important obligation. Janazah or funeral prayer is to be offered out of the Mosque or it can be offered in the graveyard but should be at some distance from the graves or a place which is specifically dedicated to offer janazah prayer. The prayer may also be said over the deceased’s grave if the person was buried prior to the prayer being performed. With regard to the reward of offering the funeral prayer, there are many authentic narrations that prove the excellence of this prayer. For example, the Prophet (PBUH) said: “Whoever follows the funeral procession and offers the funeral prayer for it, will get a reward equal to one Qirat, and whoever attends it till burial, will get a reward equal to two Qirat.” It was asked, “What are two Qirat?” He replied, “Equal to two huge mountains.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
